And the asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses. ~ 1 Samuel 9:3 KJV
How many today actually heed their parent's instructions? Obviously as a grown-up who isn't staying under their parents roof one isn't expected to obey or take heed of everything their parents say. But as a young person or old person staying under your parent's roof, listening to what your parents say might change your life.
It pays to listen to parents' instructions, and if your parents are Spirit-led people, even more beneficial for you. God has used parents to guide his people in his perfect will. If he did it before he can still do it today.
Similarly with how David's story began, yes, David... The man after God's heart. David was anointed king in the presence of his family by Prophet Samuel. We are told in the bible that even though David had been anointed he still looked after his father's sheep. He was then requested to work in the palace to play the harp for the king.
"So David went to Saul and began serving him. Saul loved David very much, and David became his armor bearer." 1 Samuel 16:21 NLT
David's father one day asked David to take a 'lunch box' to his brothers who were part of the king's army. David didn't refuse or question, he simply followed the instruction. I believe David being at that army camp was God's will. Had he refused to follow his dad's instruction, he might have missed the opportunity to slay the giant and gain the popularity and loyalty he gained in Israel and with the soldiers.
"But David occasionally went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem." ~ 1 Samuel 17:15 NKJV
Even with his position David was still humble. He still went back to help his father with the sheep, he didn't decide to stay full time at the palace. God used his father, Jesse to lead David into his plan.
David listened to his father and his life changed. Obviously, this doesn't mean when your parents tell you to go steal or kill you must do it, one still has to use wisdom and if whatever you are told doesn't go against God's written word, why not?
